Visiting Contemporary Art Gallery Dia: Beacon
I'm currently embarking on an exciting journey as I transition from completing my master's degree last year to moving abroad. It's a thrilling new chapter, and what better way to start it than by exploring the world? My travels have begun in the USA, and I'm eager to share the incredible experiences I encounter along the way. To kick things off, let me introduce you to one of my recent discoveries Dia: Beacon.
Ok, not so recent as I have been before but Dia: Beacon Gallery is definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area. Located just an hour and a half from the city, it makes for a perfect day trip. The gallery showcases stunning pieces of contemporary art and offers a pleasant stroll around its scenic surroundings. The nearby town is charming, with a variety of coffee shops, cafes, boutiques, and more to explore.
Bonus Tip: If you’re into hiking like I am, be sure to check out the Beacon Reservoir trail just outside of town—it’s definitely worth the trek!
The gallery is in a multi-level factory once used for Nabisco printing, creating a dynamic backdrop for its collection of installations, wall art, and multimedia pieces. Despite the amount of artwork held within this space, the layout allows each piece to breathe without feeling crowded—a refreshing experience often missing in many contemporary galleries. I don't want to give too much away, but you'll encounter works by renowned artists such as Andy Warhol, Steve McQueen, and one of my personal favourites, Louise Bourgeois. It’s a showcase you won’t want to miss!
The highlight of the exhibition for me was Richard Serra's Torqued Ellipses. This remarkable collection features three immense steel sculptures, each meticulously rolled into towering cylindrical and spirals. As soon as I stepped into the room, I was struck by the sheer scale and presence of these colossal works. The initial impression was one of awe and intimidation.
Walking around each sculpture, I was intrigued by the small openings, creating an entryway inside. Stepping inside these sculptures, I found myself sinking into a space, that feels both expansive and intimate. The interplay of light and shape within the sculptures creates a warm, immersive environment, as the walls are so large it blocks you from the outside world. The experience evokes a profound sense of calm and isolation as if being temporarily transported to a different realm. Serra’s Torqued Ellipses truly captures the power of art to alter our perception and provide a moment of contemplative solitude.
Dia: Beacon is definitely worth a trip, they also have discounted ticks for students. So don’t miss out!!
